The UK VRQ qualifier
was scheduled to be a 3 day event over 8-9-10 of March 2002 at the record breaking Bwlch mountain in South Wales.
Day 1 was windy, misty
and wet. A bit of sport flying was done at a nearby coastal site.
Day 2 dawned brighter
and with a strong breeze. This photo shows Alex McMeekin helping me
point the anemometer into an 86 mph gust. This photo shows one of
the pilots doing some awesome wind surfing. Thanks to Mike Evans for both photos.
By lunchtime the
breeze had dropped to around 40 mph and we were able to fly 4 rounds on Mickey's
Slope. I was flying the MG06 Pike on only its second outing. I squeezed sub forties
out of 3 of the 4 rounds and was getting 39s out of the average air, which I believe made
it the best plane there. You can see a few photos of the MG06 Pike here.
Day 3 was as windy as
day 2 started out and we abandoned at 13:00 hrs.
The only photos I was
able to grab were of John Phillip's Pike F3B, here, here and here.
The final results
were...
